It all started with a premonition at 14 years old that I would end up in Colorado, despite growing up in the sprawling metropolis of Houston, TX. Since moving to the mountains a decade ago, I’ve carved out an exciting career in outdoor education as a facilitator, organizer, and outdoorsman. In all my work, I’ve dedicated my time to creating spaces that welcome and affirm Black, and Indigenous, people of color in natural spaces. My education is in outdoor leadership and positive youth development and I have supported and mentored young people in the Denver region for nearly 10 years. Every month I organize nature-based community events in Colorado and specialize in activities such as climbing, cycling, and overnight trips. I believe the natural world has the power to build our sense of Self, Community, Earth, and Wonder, leading to happier and healthier lives. I’m starting Travl Wide not only as a bikepacking enthusiast but as a pathway for my community to build upon those senses.

I love photographing people on their bikes. But I especially love to center people of color in my photography. The camera can be a tool for good but it can also be a weapon, acting as an extension of racist frameworks.

This is why it is important to have diverse photographers, who consciously aim to portray the complex narratives of people of color.

When we think of representation we think of capturing people in front of the lens, but to me, representation needs to factor in the people who are behind the lens. How we are represented in imagery is crucial to our storytelling.
