Why Try Bikepacking
-
Sense of Place
Bikepacking or bike camping increases our sense of place on this Earth, thus our relationship with the natural world. When we climb up every hill and descend down every bend, our relationship with a place drastically increases. Increasing our sense of place is one antidote to depression, loneliness, and anxiety.
-
Freedom of Movement
Bikepacking grants us freedom of movement we otherwise are constantly fighting for. Our right to move is constantly under threat due to an over-policing of Black and brown bodies. To bike from one horizon to another equips us with a sense of liberation that's difficult to find elsewhere.
-
Simply Fun
Bikepacking is just simply fun. Yes, there's some type 2 fun in there (difficult during but fun afterward), but the most challenging adventures are typically the most rewarding. Also, our sense of play is often stifled at very early ages and to reclaim this during adulthood is an act of resistance and liberation.
What is Bikepacking?
“Simply put, bikepacking is the synthesis of all-terrain cycling and self-supported backpacking. It evokes the freedom of multi-day backcountry hiking and travels off the beaten path, but with the range and thrill of riding a nimble bicycle. It’s about venturing further into places less traveled, both near and far, via singletrack trails, gravel, and forgotten dirt roads, carrying the essential gear, and not much more.”
