Preparing for & Climbing 14'ers: Your First Summit

Ready to conquer your first 14'er? Our Preparing for Climbing 14'ers workshop is designed for beginners who are eager to take on the challenge of Colorado’s iconic 14,000-foot peaks. In this 1.5–2 hour session, you’ll learn everything you need to prepare for the climb—from physical training and gear selection to mental readiness and high-altitude safety.

Co-led by Evan Gill, also known as the Black Sherpa, who’s summited all the 14'ers in Colorado, and Jalen Bazile, a seasoned expert in mountaineering and month-long expeditions, this workshop will give you the tools and knowledge to confidently take on your first high-altitude adventure.

We’ll cover:

  • Physical Readiness & Training: Learn the key exercises and fitness routines to prepare your body for the demands of climbing high-altitude peaks. We’ll guide you through strength, endurance, and cardiovascular training that’s essential for success.

  • Gear Selection & Packing: Understand the essential gear you’ll need for a 14'er climb, from technical clothing and boots to harnesses, trekking poles, and hydration systems. We’ll also cover how to pack efficiently and safely for your climb.

  • Altitude Sickness & Safety: Get to know the signs of altitude sickness and how to prevent it. Learn how to stay safe at high altitudes, including hydration strategies, acclimatization techniques, and emergency preparedness.

  • Route Planning & Navigation: Discover how to plan your climb, choose your route, and navigate the terrain safely. We’ll cover trail selection, timing, and how to read trail conditions and weather forecasts.

  • Mental Preparation: Learn the mental techniques that will help you stay focused and confident throughout the climb. We’ll discuss strategies for managing stress, pacing, and how to stay positive during challenging sections of the ascent.

By the end of this workshop, you’ll walk away with clear takeaways and actionable steps to prepare for your first 14'er climb. With the right preparation, you’ll be ready to take on Colorado’s towering peaks and experience the thrill of standing at the top.
